CD – A new pearl in the catalogue calls for your urgent attention: « Sleepsongs » is a delicate collection or Irish ballades in a package which is anything but « has been »!
The captivating, delicate voice of Irish singer Caitríona O’Leary immediately casts a spell on us. In Sleepsongs she performs a selection of traditional lullabies and other songs on the theme of sleep with Dúlra, her excellent Early music ensemble. She evokes Irish mythology, fairies, cursed princesses, and valiant warriors. The album is the final volume of a trilogy of 17th and 18th century repertoire by Caitríona O’Leary, [including works which were] often retranscribed one or two hundred years later. The singer has been practicing and exploring these scores for years; in the CD’s liner notes she tells the story of how she selected, adapted, reinterpreted and occasionally combined these traditional songs. Mirth and tears, anguish and beauty: it’s all here, with elegance and wit, as are the brilliant photos by Laelia Milleri which accompany the album.
